Subsidization of any news organization by the Federal Government should not be tolerated. I support independent bi-partisan journalists any way I can. However, I'm 91 years old, on a fixed income and cannot support them all with paid subscriptions. I do financially support what I can. Is my opinion in comment sections of those I can't financially support then silenced?
No matter how fixated Carnage is on Europe, I’m old enough to remember that the Dairy cartel wrecked the EU deal Harper had put in place and Freeland came home crying when she could not get a deal. The dairy cartel gave us a 1/2 asses deal then, and Carnage, for all his pretty words will fare no better. Carnage truly believes he’s the smartest guy in the room … hint, he is not.
Further more, he could triple our trade with the EU … and it would still be less than 20%, the US makes up more than 75% of our trade. Trump is temporary, our geography is permanent, the US is where our goods flow, it’s not an option.
The problem with your "solution" is that CANADA did not see the writing on the wall about how stupid is the supply management system. Again, again, we had to be shown "the error of our ways" by DJT. Does that mean that we are not a real nation?
Of course, we are not talking about a Hollywood movie but the time of yore that was "better." I have to be honest, yore was not totally "better" but it was freer and allowed people to make choices that are today denied to them. Yore needed a lot of work and, in fact, some of that needed work has occurred. Yore is seen by many our age (that would be you and I, Peter) as some golden time; nope, it wasn't, but it did have one hell of a lot to recommend it over some of what we experience now. [Bearing in mind, of course, that there were some negatives.]
I really don't think there is much purpose to dig into the thoughts behind the “the most European of non-European nations." comment, because there is no thought behind it. It is just another in a long line to feel good lines that the Liberals and the rest of the left wing intelligentsia utter without ever thinking what it means. Add it to elbows up, the planet is burning, land acknowledgements, etc.
Being serious now, besides the hypocrisy of the left perfectly illustrated in the article, it is worrisome that the PM is governing like parliament doesn't exist. What is the point of having a "democracy"?
Meanwhile, in Halifax, all of our Canada Day celebrations are aboriginal themed (it’s Kanata Day, don’t you know?), so I guess our leaders didn’t read the memo!
Oh man, I love your writing - this was laugh out loud funny. As for the trolls, I say make ‘em pay if they wanna play. Keep up the good work and enjoy Canada / Dominion Day.
I love reading Peter Menzies’ work. He’s got Some Rex Murphy in him. He hits the nail on the head and makes me laugh all at once. Great message and true.
The Laurentian Elite have such a colonial mindset. Canada is a backwater, and Europe is the only source of elegance and sophistication. Having been Governor of the Bank of Canada was meaningless in terms of vote getting, but having been elevated to the rarified sphere of the Bank of England, now that gave Carney an aura of exceptionalism and a seal of approval that was impossible to resist. No wonder he plays up the European angle as much as he can.
Good stuff. BTW it is Tanya Talaga, not Tonya. She and the Globe and Mail are accused by me of Journalistic Arson... that burnt the country down. More to come on this. Again - why do we have to subsidize this? "Journalistic Arson. Muskrat with a Zippo.

I am hopeful that Trump will take out the dairy cartel, which would benefit all Canadians (except the rentiers who own the quotas).
Me too … the wastage alone, much less the jacked up prices we pay make this an issue.

Just asking.
I could make that argument but not today when I’d prefer to remember the way we were
Ah! The way we were.

I think the vast majority of Canadians are secretly gunning for Trump to take out the dairy cartel.
Totally agree with you Sheila.

Bravo, Peter! You've made me a subscriber with this piece.

Okay. I subscribed, finally😁.
One man's "troll" is another man's incisive critique.
I would prefer that you trust your readers enough to manage their own experiences on here with the blocking/muting tools available.

Grok did a wonderful job 😝

Fixed. Thanks.
Pleasure! Loved the Bavarian Beer Meister look in the Carney image. Wonder what the full view in lederhosen would be like?
Thanks for the link. That was interesting 🤔
There are 44 countries in Europe. Hardly homogeneous. Which country or countries is Canada most like? Russia? Poland? Greece? Belarus?
Good info.
Thanks.
