In Canada, that's Canadian Press, which shapes the dialectic that dominates most of our media. And guess what? It leans kinda leftish. Plus! CBC loves the West!
I spent 40 years as an ink-stained wretch, in daily papers, and our style-book debates were as I recall generally non-political. (Got a few days to spare? Then let me tell you how much the world needs the Oxford comma!)
Your comments here are spot-on. “People experiencing homelessness”
always makes me look for a way to get “people experiencing drunkenness” into the conversation. And perhaps “sex-change operation” was unfair in some cases but I have no doubt what George Orwell would have said about “gender-affirming care”.
There’s an awful lot of loaded language in modern “news” and it’s all loaded from the left side.
Thanks for pointing this out so crisply, cleary, and well.
MSM has become elevator music for the globalist elite. It's a non-stop drivel towards a permanent digital, DEI cult. Stay in your narrow band! March there! Trumpet loud! Drown out the issues important to us! Will their psyche explode if they use critical thinking skills instead of report on high agreement.
If they bark, look in the other direction. If they shame, stand taller, it is a badge. We know them by what they don't cover, who they attack and how irrelevant they have become.
Our world is officially inverting from a right's based society to an access authoritarian based society in a rather permanent way. That should be fought at every stage.
Reading the laws passing has convinced me the evidence of the conspiracy are the LAWS THEMSELVES. The disinterest in how the globalist tropes (thou shalt not disagree, speak, report or show the dissent) are the foundations of their dystopia. Their fold over that is telling. Either they are all dumb, or controlled or need a thought leader to expound.
But the biggest changes to society are never critically examined. And that is what we are missing. It is not merely that these big brother laws are intended to be permanent, that they will be ai administered, that they will have a carbon allotment. Who reports on the smart city infrastructure and the funding?
I have yet to see one person report that Toronto is a c40 city.
Nice post. The Jesuits used to tell us if we define the terms, we will win the debate. In my mind, "progressive" long ago came to mean either badly informed, or stupid. While those are obviously not the same thing, the consequences are often identical.
You & Tara need to school Harrison in introducing questions. His are too long and rambly; radio interviewers used to do it best - 10 seconds & 15 words. I assume you review the scheduled topics beforehand.
But you also need to finish a response and not talk over Harrison when he's trying to change topics. I believe he's supposed to be in charge of the program. Let him do his work.
All true. I feel shame for making a mess of things. It is tricky on Zoom and I’ve never done this before. I will speak less going forward, assuming the experiment persists but they would be wise to get someone younger and more experienced
As you pointed out, the style guide is often called the Bible ... it is the rulebook for CP, but as you know Peter, when we worked at Postmedia papers - we were not bound by the guide. Our editorials and news stories often followed our own paper's styles.
I agree that the barometer tilts toward the left, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's incorrect. For example, the term 'commited suicide' is now replaced with 'died by suicide' -- committed was language in the law books as it was illegal. That has changed and it is also because of the stigma. I don't have a problem with that.
At Postmedia, we created our own style guide for the now defunct news service. It was not left leaning as it worked with the National Post and Calgary Herald just as much as the Vancouver and Victoria papers.
Someone has to keep the questions going and continue to revise how journalists use the language just as much as Oxford and others continually monitor, examine and debate language and they are the gatekeepers who list the various uses of words.
I would sooner have the academics and journalists suggesting the use of words, rather than left- or right-leaning political parties with their loaded language.
I never actually worked at a Postmedia paper. The purpose of this was to illustrate to people how the decisions are made that shape the language that shapes the narrative; that news people make moral judgements on language in consultation with relatively small groups that don’t involve the public. It’s a lot of power exercised by a relatively small groups of people. That’s all.

LOOK AT CHAPTER 6 TO SEE THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT.

or the Migration Compact (which explains all immigration policies and funding of immigrants in hotels, jobs, etc in OECD countries).
DEI is not a moral program. it approximates one, while deceiving us as to the nature of it.
equity is the same number of calories. see the c40 report.
who is reporting or road diets?
when did s.181 of the criminal code (false reporting) get archived.
the pitter pat of their news directing us where to look is obscene.
Curious to hear what you think of Vance’s speech in Munich which I think was earth shaking in its call for common sense (Chantal head to explode)

I’d define it as a complete lack of common sense
Yeah, that too.
Narrative control is and always has been about language
“Climate emergency”
Etc.

While enjoying the excellent performances of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the following comes to mind.
"TSO. Where DEI goes to DIE."
