Aaaaannnnddds…..the Dow is up 2600 today. Maybe the tariffs aren’t so terrifying/catastrophic/panic inducing as you think.
I am not a big importer exporter, but I have done business around the world, importing about 100 × 40’ sea cans of stuff. Maybe 150, come to think of it. I have some experience. Every country in the world does what they can to tilt the field in their favour. EVERY COUNTRY. The US had a philosophy of free trade, which is best overall, but the rest of the world doesn’t. China is the worst offender. And tariffs are a small part of the tools they use to take advantage of other countries.
You want the US to play Marquis of Queensbury rules when everyone else is a street fighter. Trump said ‘we can play that way’. And he is.
You have to remember Trump always does and says things on a massive scale, in the hope that some of it will work. Whose to say that all these jobs will happen, but maybe if half of them do, doesn't it pay off in the end? Depending on who you listen to this is simply Trump's way of setting up negotiations. Such as this interview between Michael Schellenberg and Batya Ungar-Sargon. It is only for ten minutes at which time you have to subscribe but you will get the drift. https://www.public.news/p/batya-ungar-sargon-trump-is-waging
To me, Trump is a combination of Grandpa Simpson's incoherent ramblings with Mr Burns selfishness and meanness. Release the hounds, D'Oh what have I done.
Actually, today’s 90-day pause proves the parallel. Remember when Grampa tried to choke Homer and Homer kicked him out of the car, forcing Abe to walk home on an isolated road in the dark? Eh? Eh?
Restoring manufacturing to America assumes there’s a large cohort of unemployed workers with the fitness, skills and desire to work in factories. Is there? 18% of Americans are 65+. Meanwhile the median age in Vietnam is 33.
Skills and education? China STEM graduates exceed 3.57 million annually (40% of graduates).
U.S. graduates 584K STEM annually (20% of graduates).
Fitness? 40% of Americans are obese. Opioid addiction is rampant. And many cannot access or afford basic health care. US life expectancy is 77.5 years. Canada’s 81.3, Japan 84.5.
Highly paid unionized auto manufacturing jobs are the exception, not the rule. Bottom line: are Americans willing to work making shoes and garments for minimum wage?
I think I heard the typical condescension in the piece, mind numbing, and those who can pass will. Not true, some people like and need physical work, how about my mind is free to be creative, I like being outside, I like accomplishing something tangible at the end of a day.
You actually talk about men losing status in these jobs and turn around and commit the same crime.
Not everyone that is intelligent wants to sit in front of a screen in an office!
Thanks, Marcie, but no, no condescension at all. I grew up working class, put myself through school working in factories and mills, and still consider myself fundamentally working class. Some of the work is mind numbing, which is just the reality of the work, not a judgement of the minds. The loss of status is what research shows manufacturing people often feel about themselves. Me? I think they should feel nothing but pride in doing an honest day’s work for a day’s pay.
Good to hear. Most people simply want to work, have a family and a simple life. A government that respects and honours these choices would be a welcome relief
Actually, Peter, it is my experience (as a well retired CPA) pretty much all work (and I have seen a lot of industries) has an incredible amount of drudgery. Oh, some work has it's moments but you have to pay for those moments with the very expensive coin of drudgery and boredom.
Well done, Peter - and well done earlier this week, Peter.
First, as for the second Peter and why no one in the media has commented on Mark Carney's great big ooops! it is really quite simple. There are essentially two reasons: a) much of the media - whatever that word means now - has, shall we say, a political "perspective" wherein there is an ...mmmm... inclination to praise of that "perspective;" and b) the media are simply looking at the shiny new thing in the window - DJT - and don't see pretty much anything else - they don't even see how incredibly dirty is the window.
Now, as to the first Peter and Grampa Simpson in his real world incarnation, there are two reasons again: a) the media is split and the first side is simply entranced, ENTRANCED, I tell you!, with DJT and his magic bean tariffs and chainsaw; and b) the second side is horrified, HORRIFIED, I tell you!, with DJT and his magic bean tariffs and chainsaw.
The result is that in this three ring circus wherein ring one is entrancement and ring two is horrification, no one is paying attention to ring three which is dementia. We all lived through Joe Biden's shining star - until it wasn't so shiny anymore. No one in the media is truly willing to brave the wrath of DJT's supporters to ask about competency.
Covid-19 was the first part of the ongoing DISASTER CAPITALISM USING MKULTRA SHOCK THERAPY for asset-stripping of workers. Trump and Carney are working together to fulfill the requirements of the 4th Industrial Revolution. " It's 2030. You'll own nothing and you'll be happy". (Klaus Schwab WEF)
Conservative media spent years convincing its readers that ALL government workers are lazy communists. This was done intentionally so that when rightfully non-compliant workers during the FAKE PANDEMIC like me were fired, lost years of future income, our benefits and fully half of our pensions....conservatives cheered it on. Same with DOGE's job cuts in the US. Forever Trumpers need to wake up and smell the mRNA ($500 Billion for Stargate) because the World Economic Forum had told us that millions would lose their jobs to Artificial Intelligence.
The predatory global capitalists are intentionally crashing the world economy in order to buy the real assets for pennies on the dollar WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BRINGING IN THE PROGRAMMABLE DIGITAL CURRENCIES (BOTH PUBLIC CBDCs and PRIVATE TETHER, XRP) FOR FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE.
I can see why no one has given you a Like ir comment. Your response shows just how little you understand that one person making a decision in one part of the world can have a major posture negative impact on many other people in the world.

This diatribe is not aging well. It’s hard to keep up. Cliffs: unless you’re in the game best to just watch.
Actually, today’s 90-day pause proves the parallel. Remember when Grampa tried to choke Homer and Homer kicked him out of the car, forcing Abe to walk home on an isolated road in the dark? Eh? Eh?
Oh dear. Mr Stockland I have never , ever watched any episode of the Simpson tv show. So your sparkling repartee went ….thud.

I’m sure all of those new factories in Trump’s America will be unionized…🙄
Unionized workers making t-shirts at $3 per hour. Yup. Just what DJT envisioned.

Agree.
The first signs of implosion have appeared. My popcorn maker has been pulled out of the drawer and sitting on the counter, waiting.

Trump and US media. Who cares?
As the late, great, Norm Macdonald would say: “THE World.”
